Flying Machines
Over the last few weeks, students in both 4th grade classes have been studying various aspects of flight: lift, weight, drag, and thrust. The culminating activity is for students to create an object using the concepts we have learned in class. The first step is for each child to decide on a goal for their project; some examples are flying up, hovering, and spinning. Then in class today students picked out supplies that would help them accomplish their goal. Keep in mind that students may change their design and need additional supplies from home (any resources can be used). Their “flying machine” will be tested in our wind tunnel at school on Monday. While the test flights are happening, students will be allowed to make adjustments to their project. A grade will be based upon their response to the questions, not on how well their machine works. Please remember that this is a student project (with parent help).
